When is the last time you pondered it? 1 hour ago? 5 minutes ago? At some point today, your mind must have taken a nosedive down the wormhole.
The other day my son was not acting himself. He wasn’t smiling at all. He had little interest in his bouncy chair. I could barely get him to look me in the eyes.
I thought. “Oh no. Is this…could this possibly be…I can’t believe…How could this be happening…Oh My God NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!”
I called the pediatrician and frantically explained the symptoms
The pediatrician sighed in disbelief and said, “Relax, he’s teething.”
I told the pediatrician that I loved her…which probably was very awkward. What the heck…she pulled me out of the wormhole.
I was SOOOOO relieved. But then, I felt like a total and complete idiot.
Why do our minds (or my mind) have this ability to instantly jump 10,000,000,000,000 steps into the darkest and worst case scenario?
I’m guessing some of you can relate?Maybe you thought you had a terrible meeting at work. You assumed that you would need to start looking for a new job which would mean putting the house up for sale and liquidating everything (even your Vitamix)…And then you find out it was not a bad meeting…but rather the client was actually just tired that day. THANK GOOOOOODDDDDDD!!!!!!!!
Or maybe you felt a pain in your chest and were positive that you were about to have a heart attack! You thought of who you would need to call to say your final goodbyes and let them know where you hid the secret stash of money…….when really, you just needed to pass some gas. Hey it happens after too much Chipotle
Or maybe your partner didn’t call you back and you wondered if they were hit by a truck or eaten by a dog or worst of all, schtooping their assistant (I’ve been watching too much Mad Men)……when really their phone lost power. Hey it happens to the best of us…like every freakin day!
It’s embedded in our mental circuitry. We are searching for what is wrong or what might go wrong. It’s a way to protect ourselves against danger.Your great great great great great great great great (add 10 more “great’s) grandfather needed this type of mental circuitry 50,000 years ago when he was being chased by Woolly Mammoths with 2 giant tusks ready to ramshod his backside….
There are no more Woolly Mammoths. And yet, most of us are still running from some terrible thing that we want to avoid…running out of money, being left alone, getting sick and dying in the worst way. Run. Run. Run!We run toward food, we run toward material pleasures, we run toward sex, we run toward money.
Something, anything to protect us from the THE WORST CASE SCENARIO.
We can never discover who we are if we are on the run. This behavior absolutely has to stop. We can’t keep living like this. For lack of better words, ANXIETY SUCKS!
Instead of fixating your attention on what you are running from…fixate on your greatness!I don’t care how many forces are pushing and pulling against you.YOU HAVE GREATNESS WITHIN YOU.
CALL IT OUT OF YOU.
PULL IT OUT OF YOU.
And if it’s not coming easily, for cryin out loud, get down in there and don’t come up until you have your greatness in your grasp!
To anyone who tends to dive down the wormhole…I say to you (and me) today and everyday:
REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE!
REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE!!
REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE!!!
